This placement is located on an island biosphere reserve in the Yucatan. The reserve is staffed year round by researchers and administrators of the site. It is a popular tourist attraction.The site is accessible by public transportation and is approximately 1 hour from a major tourist area.
Volunteers assist at the reserve with: the protection and monitoring of birds including the collection of data concerning migratory, mating and feeding behavior; studying and protecting nesting sites; monitoring fishing permits; algae study; monitoring and identifying fish populations; constructing interpretive trails; designing and implementing public education projects. Local biologists supervise the various projects.
