Ecology Center/Sea Turtles
Placement fee: $975
This placement is located at a coastal ecology center in the Yucatan. The center is staffed year round. Tourists also visit the center and the surrounding resort area for snorkeling and scuba diving. The site is accessible by public transportation and approximately 1 hour from a major tourist area.
Volunteers assist at the center with a variety of tasks including staffing the info center and working in the office to helping with an on-going water study, collecting samples and data. During the school year interested volunteers can help with programs at the local school involving topics such as Natural Science and hygiene. Suggestions by volunteers are welcome for additional activities and subjects. In the months of May-October the sea turtles are nesting and hatching on the beaches and volunteers assist with collecting data, monitoring and protecting the nesting sites.
