Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

Work Description: Working with a wildlife rescue/rehabilitation center. Tasks include feeding animals, cleaning holding cages, building new cages and nest boxes, trail maintenance, conducting tours for visitors, helping with wildlife rescues project, etc.

Location: Inland, 45 minutes from Pacific Coast, Costa Rica

Meals & lodging: Volunteers pay $400 per month for meals and lodging which are provided at the facility.

Dates available: Year-round

Requirements: Spanish speaking skills are helpful, interest in working outdoors, self-directed, current tetanus and negative T.B. test, one month minimum stay. Experience working with animals is helpful.

Cloudforest Reserve

Work Description: Working with a rainforest reserve. Volunteers assist with trail maintenance, light construction and maintenance of facilities, operation of the reserve's reception area and store. Volunteers who stay for longer periods (1 month plus) have greater opportunities to be involved in other activities, such as assisting with research projects, teaching environmental education and reforestation projects.

Location: Northwestern Costa Rica

Meals & lodging: Volunteers pay $9 per day for meals and lodging which are provided at the preserve.

Dates available: Year-round

Requirements: Spanish skills are helpful (not required), prepared to live and work in a remote forest area, prepared for physical outdoor work

Teaching

Cloudforest School

Work Description: Working as an assistant teacher in a small rural school, preschool through 8th grade. Volunteers may assist a teacher with basic classes at a particular grade level and may also assist in other areas, such as music, art, environmental education, gardening, English language, etc.

Location: Northwestern Costa Rica

Meals & lodging: Volunteers live with local host families and pay $200 per month for meals and lodging

Dates available: Year-round (School vacations from mid-June to mid-July, mid-Dec. to mid-Jan.)

Requirements: Spanish speaking skills are helpful but not required (classes are taught in English), interest in teaching and working with children (experience is helpful), prepared to live in a small village in the rainforest.

Rural Schools

Work Description: Volunteers assist with teaching in escuelas (elementary schools) in small rural communities about 4 hours south of San José by bus. Several communities have one or two-room school houses with one or two teachers serving 30 to 60 students, grades 1 to 6. Other schools are larger, more developed, with more teaching staff and more resources. There may also be opportunities to be involved with a community in other ways. Past volunteers have offered evening classes in conversational English to parents and other adults.

Location: San Isidro de El General area

Meals & lodging: Room and board are provided by local families for approximately $8 to $10 per day. Most homes have running water, indoor plumbing and electricity.

Requirements: A background in Spanish language is necessary. Volunteers should be self-motivated, able to work independently and prepared to create their own lesson plans. A minimum time commitment of 3 months is required. Longer time commitments are preferred. Experience in teaching or working with youth is helpful.

Sea Turtle Monitoring

Work Description: Working with a sea turtle conservation project. Volunteers assist with patrolling beaches at night to sight nesting turtles, recording data on nesting turtles, counting eggs, relocating eggs when necessary, managing the hatchery, etc.

Location: Caribbean Coast, Costa Rica

Meals & lodging: Lodging options include bunkhouse dormitories and living with local host families. In either case, volunteers pay $10 per night for meals and lodging.

Dates available: Early March through late August

Requirements: Strong interest in conservation, prepared to work night shifts and live in a remote setting.

Agro-ecological Farm Project

Work Description: Working with an agro-ecological farming project. Projects include organic farming/gardening and composting, caring for farm animals, operating a tree nursery, reforestation, environmental education classes for local children and teachers, agro-forestry workshop for local farmers. Volunteers may improve their skills in Spanish language by taking classes at the farm with local, native-speaking instructors.

Location: Cartago area of Costa Rica (1 hour southwest of San Jose)

Meals & lodging: Volunteers pay $7 per day for meals and bunkhouse lodging. There is running water, indoor plumbing and electricity. Family stay options are possible.

Dates available: Year-round

Requirements: Prepared for physical labor, interested in integrating into the daily life of a small rural community, background in Spanish language.

Farming & Conservation Project

Work Description: Working with a cooperative farming and forest conservation project. Projects include growing coffee and a variety of vegetables, organic composting, operation of a tree nursery, reforestation projects and planting trees for windbreaks around crop fields. Volunteers assist with planting, harvesting, weeding, collecting tree seeds, digging irrigation ditches and all tasks related to agriculture and reforestation projects.

Location: Monteverde Cloudforest area of Costa Rica

Meals & lodging: Volunteers live with host families and pay $8 per day for meals and lodging. Volunteers are invited to be a member of a family and are expected to help with household chores.

Requirements: Prepared for physical labor, interested in integrating into the daily life of a small rural community, background in Spanish language.
